There’s no instant gratification in the wine industry. If you want to make a new wine, you need to plan it, price it, prepare it, plant it, produce it, package it, promote it...the list goes on. Unless you can bypass the vine planting and buy fruit that is ready to harvest, this process can take many years. My father, Chris Killeen, planted several Portuguese varieties in the 1990s to further develop his passion for producing vintage ports. For many, the summer holidays are a time of slowing down and recharging, but for us, it’s when we start the hustle and haul of making wine. The vineyard team are in full swing and won’t slow down until April or May when the last of the grapes are harvested. The winemaking team - still working on our 2017 wines - are also prepping the barrels, tanks and equipment in time for vintage, which usually starts around Australia Day for us when we pick the Chardonnay, and a short time later, Muscat (for Moscato and Sparkling). Continue reading...
