Which varieties do we grow?

Tuesday, February 05, 2019

If you were at a trivia night and had to name as many grape varieties you could, how many do you think you could list? Do you know how many grape varieties there are in total? It would be an amazing (if not improbable) feat to remember all 1,368 varieties listed in the comprehensive bible of ‘Wine Grapes’ by Robinson, Harding & Vouillamoz (2012). Even to narrow it down further to the 130 varieties grown in Australia that James Halliday writes about in ‘Varietal Wines’ (2015) would be quite impressive. Continue reading...

Autumn Quinta Quarterly

Monday, March 19, 2018

There’s no instant gratification in the wine industry. If you want to make a new wine, you need to plan it, price it, prepare it, plant it, produce it, package it, promote it...the list goes on. Unless you can bypass the vine planting and buy fruit that is ready to harvest, this process can take many years. My father, Chris Killeen, planted several Portuguese varieties in the 1990s to further develop his passion for producing vintage ports. Since his passing, S&K has been using these fantastic varieties for red table wines as well as fortified production.  Continue reading...

Autumn Quinta Quarterly

Thursday, March 02, 2017

We are now into Week Four of vintage and have picked Chardonnay, Muscat (for Moscato and Sparkling Muscat Blanc) and Tinta Roriz. It’s an exciting time, and an event that culminates a year’s worth of decisions and hard work in the vineyard and winery. How much to make, yield and cropping levels, the best pruning method, which oak to buy, and what style we’re aiming for, are all questions that pop up regularly.  Continue reading...

Great Wines Are Made in the Vineyard

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

There's no better winemaking adage than "great wines are made in the vineyard". You can do the fanciest science with the ferments and buy the best oak, but unless the fruit is in top condition once it hits the winery during vintage, it's like trying to use cheap plastic wrap...it just doesn't work. Our vineyards have been a top priority over the last few years and when Ruston Prescott joined Stanton & Killeen as our Viticulturist in December 2013, he and his team had their work cut out for them.  Continue reading...

Vintage 2016 Winemaker's Report

Friday, May 27, 2016

It was an early start to vintage, picking Chardonnay the day before Australia Day, but we had expected it so we were (sort of) ready for it. The next cab off the rank was the muscat for Moscato and Sparkling Muscat Blanc – this must be a bit of a winemaking record; we picked on the 4th February and bottled on the 9th of March! As is usual for vintage, it was days of frenetic activity as this early fruit came in, followed by a bit of a “phony vintage” lull, and then it all kicked off again. Continue reading...

Portuguese Trio Museum Release

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

When we released our Portuguese Trio in 2013, it was one of the first occasions that S&K had produced table wines using our extensive selection of Iberian grape varieties traditionally used for our Vintage Fortifieds (another occasion being The Prince Reserva blend of '08, '09 and '13). After their first popular release, we stashed away the remaining cases in our museum only to be used for special releases such as dinners, anniversaries and by request.

The Prince Returns!

Monday, June 23, 2014

In 2008 and 2009, we produced a savoury, Portuguese-inspired style of red table wine in honour of sixth generation Chris Killeen (08.07.54-19.06.07), affectionately known as "The Prince of Port". Using four different varieties usually reserved for our Vintage Fortifieds, the 2008 was a blend of 30% Souzão, 26% Tinta Roriz, 22% Tinto Cao and 22% Touriga Nacional. Recent tastings have proven these Iberian varieties varieties have staying power and meld superbly to create a mouth-filling food wine.  Continue reading...
