With Natasha on maternity leave, the task of writing the front page of our newsletter has been handed to me. I pondered for sometime on a theme before I decided that an update of our new releases would be fitting as we have just bottled several wines from the 2018 vintage.
Three years ago we added Alvarinho and Arinto to our diverse repertoire of grape varieties. These Portuguese white grapes were chosen for their ability to withstand challenging weather conditions and still produce quality fruit. Vintage 2018 tested that notion and proudly, we have produced two new stunning white wines.
The Alvarinho is a floral and fruit-driven style with delicious crisp acidity - it will delight those who enjoy Riesling. The Arinto is more full bodied and spicy, and sits closer on the white wine spectrum to Chardonnay. As far as we know, we will be the third winery in Australia to produce Arinto. We will release these wines first to our members in the coming months via email, so make sure you keep an eye on your inbox.
Spring has always been the best time to release the The Prince Reserva, our savoury and medium-weight Portuguese red blend. The 2017 release has been one of our favourites and we can't wait for you to try it.
I hope to see many of our Melbourne members at 'Rutherglen in the City' at Fed Square on 22-23 of September. It will be a great way to try a range of wines in a relaxed atmosphere. Please see our website for more details. Cheers, Wendy Killeen
The Prince Reserva is a special, family favourite and is our only new release this spring. The wine is named after sixth generation winemaker, the late Chris Killeen, who was known in the local wine industry as 'The Prince of Port'. He had a passion and skill for making fortified wine, especially Vintage Fortified, and planted Portuguese grape varieties to achieve his unique style.
At its essence, The Prince Reserva is about taking Chris' favourite Portuguese varieties, and creating a very special red wine that changes slightly, year by year, depending on the season. The 2017 release is a blend of - 46% Touriga Nacional, 22% Tinto Cão, 20% Tinta Roriz, 6% Souzão and 6% Tinta Barroca.
The varieties are co-fermented ensuring greater integration of flavours and tannins. The wine is matured in specially selected French oak puncheons that have had a long slow toast, delivering a subtle spiciness that marries beautifully with the richness of the fruit.
Its medium body opens with an intriguing nose of fresh red fruits and exotic perfume. Layers of complexity will delight with cherry and wild berry flavours, finishing long with silky tannins. We love to pair it with paella, grilled meats or a rich, tomato-based pasta dish.
The Prince Reserva 2017
A complex and savoury blend of Portuguese varieties, with rich fruit, silky tannins and great structure. Cellar for up to 10 years.
