During the Christmas and New Year holidays people visiting our cellar door will have the rare chance to try a selection of our iconic Vintage Fortifieds-previously known as Vintage Ports. We are very excited to offer on tasting, without charge, a 1984, 1993, 2000 and 2008.
The 1984 Vintage is one of the oldest we have for tasting and sale, and as a thirty year old wine, it is still incredibly fresh and full of flavour. The 1993 and 2000 were also considered some of the best of their respective decades and the 1993 is a perfect 21st birthday gift for the coming year (2014). The 2008, our latest release, will also be on tasting to show how the style has progressed over the decades.
Sixth Generation Chris Killeen (1954-2007) was passionate about Vintage Fortifieds and was described in 2006 by wine writer Jeni Port as...
The man who almost single-handedly holds the future of Australian vintage port in this country
He was one of the first Australian winemakers to move away from the traditional Australian style and instead use Portuguese varieties like tinta barocca, tinto coa and touriga nacional to produce a more elegant, savoury and versatile style of wine. His legacy has continued at the winery with some sensational vintages after his passing due to be released in the future. Very few wineries in Australia make fortified wine, let alone a bottle-aged port style, and Stanton and Killeen pride ourselves on offering some of the finest in the country.
These are excellent wines to open on birthdays and special occasions such as weddings and the winery sells magnums of every year: particularly useful when entertaining many people. There’s nothing better to get the party started when a 30, 40 or even 50 year old wine is revealed and people start reminiscing about the year in question.
If you have recently opened one of Stanton and Killeen’s Vintage Fortifieds, please leave your comments or recommendations on our Vintage Fortified page, where you can assist other VF enthusiasts in deciding when to open and enjoy their bottles. The Retrospective Tasting will be an excellent opportunity to see if you like your ports young, old or even all at once!
