Success in 2017 Halliday Wine Companion

Monday, August 08, 2016

The release of James Halliday's annual Wine Companion in August always sparks a high degree of excitement and curiosity. It's a fantastic way to hear about new wineries or the latest 'must-try' wine with a comprehensive review of many of Australia's 2500+ wineries.

Once again, Stanton & Killeen have been awarded the '5 Red Star Winery' rating, with our winery name written in red within the book. Only 102 wineries, or 3.6%, have this status and are "generally acknowledged to have had a long track record of excellence in the context of its region — truly the best of the best" (

Our fortifieds have received excellent reviews with the Rare Muscat and Grand Muscat both receiving 97 points.

Rare Rutherglen Muscat:

Fabulous intensity and length. You could be inspired to argue that this is where character starts and ends. It pours it on but leaves time for nuance; it fills the palate with concentrated flavour but keeps something up its sleeve for the finish. One sip and it has you convinced.

Grand Rutherglen Muscat:

The flavours reach back into the past and pull out into the future. The history has been rich. This is a flame of flavour, monumentally intense and yet precisely well judged. Dust off the word 'tremendous', its services are required.

Rare Rutherglen Topaque

Phenomenal intensity and length. Sweet tea leaves meet rancio meet leatherwood honey and candied orange. The full hedonistic experience at the twist of a screwcap.

The 2015 and 2016 wines are yet to be tasted and rated, but we will certainly be looking forward to reviews of these wines in the 2018 Wine Companion as both years were spectacular vintages in Rutherglen.
