We don't often enter our Rare Muscat and Rare Topaque in wine shows due to our very limited reserves of these 25+ year old wines but when we do, we are always thrilled to earn outstanding results for these precious wines.
This year at the Boutique Wine Awards presentation lunch in Sydney on Friday 17th of July, Wendy Killeen (pictured with Founding Chairman Huon Hooke) accepted the Chris Killeen Memorial Trophy for our Rare Muscat which received 57 points. Our Rare Topaque also earned a gold medal and 55.5 points along with the Grand Muscat. The Trophy was named after Chris' passing in 2007 to honour his dedication to producing and promoting Australia's unique style of luscious fortifieds.
Whilst we were proud to win two golds and a trophy for our fortifieds, we were extremely excited to earn a gold medal and 55.5 points for The Prince Reserva 2013. Only five other wines in the 'Red Blend' class received 55.5 points from over 50 entries and the trophy winning wine (Rockcliffe's 'Quorram Rocks' Cab Shiraz) was awarded 56 points. So to be only 0.5 points off the trophy winning wine, we think, is pretty darn good.
There will be no 2014 Prince release due to the 2013 frosts but the 2015 vintage is shaping up to be pretty spectacular. It's a wine that is special to the S&K brand as we are creating this savoury, elegant blend using Portuguese varieties Chris Killeen-'The Prince of Port'-planted decades ago to use in his individual style of Australian vintage port. Vineyard Manager, Ruston Prescott, has a brand new vineyard ready to go for 2015 and 2016 plantings of both red and white Portuguese varietals and Winemaker, Andrew Drumm, has a penchant for Portuguese style reds and can't wait to get his hands dirty making more of this style of wine for S&K.
